The history of Merlimau can be traced back to its days as an active agricultural center during the colonial era. The name of this town is believed to be derived from the tradition of "melimau keris" (stropping the keris with lime) by the local residents which the Malay community at that time was very reliable in the knowledge of martial arts, pencak, and the art of self-defense armed with keris. Among other sources, the origin of the name Merlimau is due to the threat of tigers at that time where the area that was originally a wilderness inhabited by wild animals was explored for settlement. In order to overcome and protect the people from the threat, Datuk Kaya Makmum who is a Bugis leader who had migrated to the area at that time ordered the people to build a fence to stop the advance of tigers or called "mara rimau". They named this place Mara Rimau, and eventually became Merlimau. Today, Merlimau still retains its rustic appeal, with beautiful landscapes and a relaxed rhythm of life that alludes to its agricultural roots. The town is also known for its warm and friendly community, which adds to its appeal.
